City Night Line - Germany Special - The ICE crosses two more borders
City Night Line
Deutsche Bahn’s night train services have been reorganised. Since the
timetable change on 9 December 2007 all DB’s night trains operate under
a single brand name, City Night Line, and on a considerably expanded
international network. The international services will be further developed.
City Night Line offers 29 connections in nine European countries. The aim is to continue the international success of the ICE trains in the night train connections. Amsterdam - together with Munich and Zurich - have become a hub for European night train services. The connections from Copenhagen, Prague, Vienna and Milan were extended to the Dutch capital. Customers from the UK can board the night trains to Berlin and Hamburg in Brussels, or change in Paris to travel overnight to Munich. For more City Night Line destinations, such as Copenhagen, Prague, Vienna and Milan, boarding the night train in Cologne is a good option. With Eurostar faster journey times following the move to St Pancras International last November, Cologne can be reached in less than 5 hours!
A sleeper compartment can now be reserved for single use without the 1st class ticket - an advantage for business travellers in particular. Only for the deluxe compartment including shower and toilet is a 1st class ticket still necessary. The SparNight fares on City Night Line start from £51.00 per person and journey for a berth in a sleeper compartment, from £38.00 for a berth in a couchette compartment and from £22.00 for a seat. One-way fares from London to Berlin, Hamburg or Munich including a 2nd class seat on the Eurostar and a couchette in a 6-berth compartment on the night train start from £75 per person.
Germany Special
Deutsche Bahn extended the Germany Special, or in German the „Dauer Spezial“, by another year. The ticket is available for as little as £22 and is valid for a single, 2nd class journey of any distance, anywhere in Germany, on IC, EC and ICE trains. It has to be booked at least 3 days in advance and is subject to availability. It can be purchased online or, for £4.00 extra, either at a DB station or by calling the Deutsche Bahn UK Booking Centre. With a small surcharge for the reservation of a seat or a berth, this ticket is also valid on the City Night Line!
The ICE crosses two more borders
Deutsche Bahn and ÖBB now operate direct ICE trains from Germany to Austria. The ICEs runs every two hours between Frankfurt and Vienna. The travel time from Nuremberg was cut to just under 5 hours. To the north as well, the ICE has extended its horizons. For the first time, there is a high-speed rail link between the capitals of Germany and Denmark. Once a day an ICE runs between Berlin and Copenhagen connecting the cities in less than 7 hours. Between Hamburg and Copenhagen there are more frequent ICE and InterCity services.
