Dresden Hauptbahnhof refurbished - design by Lord Norman Foster
After a six-year refurbishment period, Dresden Hauptbahnhof was officially reopened on 10 November. The new architectural highlight of the building dating from 1898 is the translucent roof made of a fibre glass membrane and covering all three sections of the station concourse. The design comes from the great British architect, Lord Norman Foster, who also designed the new dome of the parliament buildings in Berlin. The station’s domed entrance hall that had been severely damaged during the flood in 2002 has also been completely renovated.
The repair and modernisation works started in October 2000. More than 250 million euros have been invested in the renovation of the building, the tracks and safety installations. Once the tracks had been connected to the electronic control centre, the conversion of the station began in 2001 following the design of architect Lord Norman Foster. The steel girders of the roof have been renovated and covered by a Teflon-coated glass fibre membrane. This new roof lets a lot of light into the station and shows off the historic steel girders in all their glory.
Every day about 50,000 travellers visit this important junction of long-distance and local trains, and 500 trains stop daily at one of the sixteen platforms of the Dresden Hauptbahnhof. Every hour ICE trains connect the capital city of Saxony to Leipzig and Frankfurt am Main. EuroCity trains depart every two hours for Berlin and Hamburg and also run on a regular basis via Prague to Budapest or Vienna. The journey to Prague takes less than three hours.
