DB Latest - August 2007

Deutsche Bahn smoke-free

As of 1 September 2007 smoke-free trains in Germany ● Designated smoking corners at stations

Deutsche Bahn will be smoke-free as of 1 September 2007. In the course of the year, smoking sections have been removed from regional trains, which have been entirely smoke-free for a month already. This will also be the case for the InterCity, EuroCity and InterCity Express trains as of September this year – the on-board bistros have been smoke-free since last October. At the moment, between 8 and 27 per cent of the seating is allocated for smokers. In the seventies it was still about half of the seating.

Germany’s stations will also become smoke-free. Deutsche Bahn started introducing the changes in 2002, initially at 54 bigger stations. In the meantime, more than 2,500 out of a total of 5,370 stations are smoke-free. The stations will have designated smoking corners in public areas – but DB will be unable to regulate a possible smoking ban in the areas that are rented by shops and restaurants.

A positive side effect of the smoke-free trains and stations, apart from promoting better health: they will be cleaner and the costs for keeping the trains and stations clean will decrease. For smokers who will have difficulty giving up smoking on DB’s trains, free nicotine chewing gums will be available on request from the personnel on board of InterCity and ICE services.
