Use your mobile phone with ease on ICE trains
As of May 2008, new technology has been introduced, with the co-operation between Deutsche Bahn and various mobile phone network providers making it possible to use mobile phones on all ICE routes without connection and network coverage problems. Quiet areas however are still available for reservation, and are clearly marked with a sign on all trains.
In co-operation with the mobile phone network providers T-Mobile, Vodafone, E-Plus and 02, Deutsche Bahn has equipped its whole fleet of approximately 250 ICE trains with so-called repeaters for improved mobile phone reception. This adaptation was initiated in May 2008. Within the next three years, a total number of 1,495 carriages should be equipped with this new technology. For the past few years, mobile phone providers have improved the quality of reception by building additional transmitter masts along important main-line routes.
For the future, telephone calls made from ICE trains will be supported by all GSM networks in Germany in order to make it possible to contact an individual on their mobile phone without any problems.
As a result of customer requests, phone calls will still not be allowed in the on-board restaurant and the designated quiet areas, which are clearly indicated by a sign. The quiet zones comprise of either a whole carriage or are partitioned off otherwise.
Ever since the implementation of this new development, passengers on ICE trains can choose between having good mobile phone reception or a quiet environment.
