Leipzig

Leipzig – a city with a unique musical heritage

Leipzig has been an important centre in intellectual life for centuries and in particular has gained an international reputation as a city of music. Besides discovering the diverse musical and cultural heritage you should take some time for an extensive shopping tour in the historic arcades.
Leipzig, An der alten Börse
Gewandhaus Concert Hall
Leipzig’s rich musical tradition is closely associated with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, which performs throughout the world. Apart from the orchestra’s ‘Große Konzerte’ (‘Great Concerts’) that have been the backbone of the programme since 1743, there are about 600 other events which take place in the Gewandhaus Concert Hall every year.

Leipzig Opera House

The history of Leipzig’s Opera House goes back to the 17th century, making it the second oldest opera house in Germany. It is home to one of Europe’s best ballet ensembles, an opera chorus, a children’s chorus and a ballet school. By the way, the Opera House has already twice been voted the ‘European Opera House of the year’.
Bach Museum
Bach Museum
Johann Sebastian Bach was Leipzig’s most famous choirmaster and cantor in the 18th century, performing at the late Gothic St. Thomas’s Church. The museum, which is part of the comprehensive Bach Archives, is located directly opposite the church and presents Bach’s work and his influence on the city’s musical life. The Bach Festival – an annual highlight held on Ascension Day – invites you to enjoy wonderful concerts of music by the great composer.

Shopping in Leipzig

Leipzig offers an excellent range of shops. In the Mädler shopping arcade – an historic mercantile building and the grandest of the arcades – you will find high-quality specialist stores and luxury boutiques. In contrast why not stroll through one of the most modern shopping and service centres in Germany – the Hauptbahnhof-Promenaden in Leipzig’s Central Station.
